#11 – The Plaza Morena Restaurant

I knew going into it that moving from Washington, DC to Waseca, Minnesota was going to be a life-changing experience on many levels. For starters, I was going from a hour plus commute in bumper to bumper traffic, to a very stress-free drive on a 2 lane highway with almost no cars on the road at all. Another example would be moving from my small apartment to a huge 4 bedroom house. Unfortunately not all of these transitions were positive. Since moving to Minnesota I have learned many life lessons, but very few of them stand out as much as the one I am about to share with you. Never, ever take for granted really fresh authentic NY style pizza. No offense to my Minnesota friends, but I don’t think they really know what good pizza tastes like.

Good fresh pizza isn’t the only thing missing in MN. Almost all the restaurants in Waseca (where I work) are either fast food chains, or buffets. So needless to say, I have packed on a few pounds. Before I went to college I was warned about the Freshman Fifteen, but before moving to MN nobody felt the need to warm me about the MN Fifteen. ;-/ Luckily not everyone puts it on, but I am sad to say I am definitely one of them who has.

Now, to my credit it wasn’t completely my fault. Or at least that is what I tell myself so I can sleep at night. One of the biggest reasons for my recent expansion is due to a place called Plaza Morena or The Mexican Restaurant. The food on the menu is just flat out amazing, but the great thing about this place is that the Owner Oscar (pictured left) is always coming up with great new (non-menu) meals for us to try out. He is a great guy and I am going to miss him. Everytime we walk in the door he greets us with a huge smile, shakes our hands and says “Hello my friend”. If you are ever in Waseca, Minnesota I STRONGLY recommend stopping by the Plaza Morena and requesting “The Colorado Burrito”. Don’t look too hard on the menu, because it’s not there, but OMG is it amazing. It’s a Steak and Mushroom burrito with a spicy red tomato sauce, green peppers and rice with cheese sauce and slices of avocado on top. Simply put, it’s just amazing.

My friends at work and I would go to this place about once a week, and sometimes more depending on special occasions like birthdays and people joining/leaving the company, etc. If you can find room after the main course (which is NOT easy!) I recommend their outstanding fried Ice Cream dessert. Yes, that’s right fried Ice Cream…. and like I said before, this is why I put on the MN Fifteen! ;-)

I am definitely going to miss this place. I can’t wait to come back to visit so I can see how Oscar and my other pals are doing.

Take Care Everyone!

Love Always,
Mike, Melissa and Landon.
